What is a Sufi?
by Munir, for Mureeds Retreat 2022
Is a Sufi someone who wears a funny hat, dances to Middle Eastern melodies, and needs to hug as many friends as possible? Perhaps some of the time but not all the time.
Is a Sufi someone who leans on his or her community to cope with life or to feel OK about himself or herself? Perhaps some of the time but not all the time.
Is a Sufi someone who is addicted to ecstatic states and goes back to feeling depressed when they inevitably pass? Perhaps some of the time but not all the time.
Is a Sufi someone who believes they must exert effort to become a “better person” or enlightened? Perhaps some of the time but not all the time.
Is a Sufi someone who looks to spiritual teachers who have died and whom they never met for help? Perhaps some of the time but not all the time.
Is a Sufi someone who “falls down” on the path and sometimes feels that they are not really getting anywhere? Perhaps some of the time but not all the time.
Is a Sufi someone who looks up to another human being who “knows” the truth? Perhaps some of the time but not all the time.
Is a Sufi “someone”? Perhaps some of the time but not all the time.

Does a Sufi know who they are without reference to any thought whatsoever? Yes! Absolutely true, all the time!
Does a Sufi easily rest in and trust the infinite context and source of all life, visible and invisible? Without doubt, always true!
Does a Sufi instinctively know how to meet life? Yes, yes, yes, without fail!
Is the Sufi a person? Not really.
Is the Sufi the knowing of the apparent person, and much, much more?
Alhamdulillah!!! Infinitely and Eternally So!
