Living to a Higher Purpse

How can we serve the highest purpose in life? By seeing all of the ways that we resist and make demands upon Life, and simply stop doing that. The whole overlay of beliefs and assumptions about our relationship to life have to come into question. This is like ceasing to become.

“But, wait! Won’t I just become a blob on the couch, never caring about anything, never doing anything. Aren’t we supposed to be engaged with life? Aren’t I supposed to ‘See and do’?”

Are you the do-er? If someone asks you “coffee or tea?” and you say “coffee”. What just happened? You as a amalgam of western civilization, your family of origin, countless choices and preferences down through the years, the whole history of humanity – were in that choice, “coffee”.  The whole universe effectively, and also no one in particular, chose coffee, didn’t it?

What if we engage as life, rather than from someone with a reaction to it? Living from the inside out. The Sufi heart with wings is the symbol of this. Heart wide open, no separation anywhere. The two wings: Indifference and Independence. This means that we do not need anything from anyone or any situation in order to be who we are. True freedom, and true empathy.

We knowingly become the knower of experience, and then experience leads the way. This is a revolution in the mind and heart. This is not a revolution hatched by the mind. It is life having its way with us. It’s Ceasing to Become.
